Software Developer Burnout

Burnout has been increasingly talked about within the realms of Software Development especially as of recent, ie Elon Musk’s comments about running Tesla. Elon Musk in an interview with The Times Newspaper said he was working up to 120 hours a week and sometimes takes Ambien to get to sleep. Therefore I feel it is important to acknowledge burnout and be wary of it. So I wanted to create a list of some tips to help and avoid feelings of burnout.
Focus on Yourself
We can often get obsessed of what others can do, what others are achieving and why aren’t we doing what they are doing. When in reality we should be worrying about ourselves and our personal plans. Focus on the goal you set out to achieve and don’t let the success of others deter or motivate yourself.
Take a break and evaluate
Taking time out to evaluate the position you are in can help you see things from a different perspective. For example if I look at my University first year project, to the code I write today demonstrates the progress that I have made which is good to be mindful of. Evaluation may also bring up about some negatives but it is necessary to be aware of those negatives to move forward.
Food, Sleep and Exercise
Food, Sleep and Exercise are good for the mind and body. Some say they don’t have enough time for sleep and exercise but productivity may greatly improve if you incorporate these in to your daily schedule.
Learn new ideas
Working on the same project using the same programming language working with the same people for possibly years will get draining. It will become monotonous. So learn something new, it doesn’t have to be related to software. Some use techniques like allowing your mind to focus on something different for 10 minutes every hour. Boredom is a thing, it is natural and it will happen. Think of creative ways to combat this.
Burnout is difficult and you can quickly find yourself becoming unmotivated. Be patient, it will pass. Use your weekends to recover, take time out to relax, exercise and prepare yourself for the week. Don’t be afraid to talk to others in the community about it as it does exist.
